カフェのバイト先の同僚で黒人の女の子(19歳)だった。ワーホリでカナダに着いたばかりで、右も左もわからない私に、ポピーのワッペンを手渡ししてくれた。
このポピー、町中の人がつけてるけど、いったい何なんだろう？てことで調べてみた。
ポピーだらけの Remembrance Day は、コモンウェルス国の人にとって、とても、とても大切な日だった。
11月11日11時の大切な日、Remembrance Day とは？
オーストラリア・カナダ・イギリスなど、コモンウェルス国に共通するイベントだよ。ワーホリする人は、その歴史や背景を英語で学んでみて。

The poppy was the first symbol of growth and rebirth and it was very prevalent because the soil conditions in the Flanders were such that the poppy flourished so there would be vast fields of nothing but red poppies.

戦時下で、ポピーのポエムを書いたカナダ人がいた。 Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae さん。戦争が終わった1918年に肺炎で亡くなっている。現在のベルギー Ypres の戦いで書かれた詩 In Flanders Fields で有名だよ。読んでみて。

例えば、関東圏の人が関西圏の文化に興味があるってのと同じ感覚かな。カナダはこんなだけど、オーストラリアはどうなの？みたいなノリで。
